American Society for Training and Development
Association for Computing Machinery: An society that studies all aspect of computing, primarily from the perspective of academic research. It has a wise range of special interests groups (see an index or all the SIGs), including:

- Systems documentation (SIGDOC)
- Computer graphics and interactive techniques (SIGGRAPH)
- Multimedia (SIGMM)

Association for Women in Communications
IEEE Professional Communication Society: Publishes the IEEE Transactions of Professional Communication and the PCS Newsletter
International Association of Business Communicators
International Communication Association: Very academic and theory-orientated. It publishes Human Communication Research, the Communication Yearbook, Communication Theory, the Journal of Communication, and the ICA Newsletter.
International Society for Performance Improvement
Society for Technical Communication: Based in the US but with chapters worldwide. The STC promotes all aspects of technical communication, from academic research to daily work practices. Publishes Intercom newsletter and Technical Communication journal.
